Open Studios Penang ‘23 Happening Over Two Weekends In October

ART STUDIOS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | 30+ PARTICIPATING ARTISTS | LAUNCH GROUP SHOW | WORKSHOPS | ART TALKS | MINI ART FILM FESTIVAL |  

 

GEORGE TOWN – Returning for the fourth time to the island: Open Studios Penang. This year themed ‘THE BUNNY VERSES, OUT OF THE RABBIT HOLE’. The annual art happening will take place on the 7th - 8th and 14th - 15th of October. Two weekends will be packed with art events. Several art studios open their doors to the public, artist exhibit their works at popular art spaces all across town. People get an opportunity to talk with artists, go for an art workshop, or art talk and even watch art on a screen at a mini film festival.

 

LAUNCH AND OPENING

Open Studios Penang ’23 will be launched with a group show at ChinaHouse. The organizing committee invites the public to join on October 6th, from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. The launch and official opening of Open Studios offers a sneak peek of all the artworks that will be on view. At the group show participating artists showcase each one of their works.

 

EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING

Visit open studios and art scenes, live events, workshops and talks. Artist Alvin Koay is a self-taught contemporary artist who will be working in his studio and exhibit works. George Burchett, an artist from Vietnam will be showcasing his current collection of the Mother in Law series.

Speakers Sherllyn Sephrenia Sunny and Drick Tan Khye Sian will be exploring the journey of adapting performing arts into mass communication during a talk at Viva Victoria. At Mangga,The Blue Mansion a Shibori & Indigo workshop will be held by artist Kam Woei Yann.

 

This all will be held at several venues (restaurants, cafes, bookshop etc.) in town. Also, at Penang’s popular art places; Art Lane, ChinaHouse, COEX, Hin Bus Depot, Hikayat and more. BUNNY VERSES

Open Studios offers a glimpse into another universe that exists right under all of our noses: the Penang art scene, and the region. Open Studios Penang ’23 is themed ‘The Bunny Verses - Out of the Rabbit Hole’ for several reasons. Following the Chinese zodiac, it’s the year of the rabbit. Apart from that, after turbulent years, we bounced back and we are ready to get out of the rabbit hole and dive fully into a riveting ART experience. It’s also the year Malaysian Michelle Yeoh won an Oscar for her performance in a movie about the multiverse. That all summed up, let’s jump into the Open Studios Penang ’23 Bunny Verses. 

 

Open Studios Penang

OSP is not-for-profit annual art happening designed for artists to exchange ideas with fellow artists, and for the public to meet the artists, see them at work, and hear directly from them about their creative process and methodology. It is a unique opportunity to see a vibrant range of art from all over Penang, Malaysia and beyond. It is funded entirely by donations and by the artists and venues themselves, and is organised entirely by a team of volunteers.
