Art Updates From Southeast Asia: A Booming Art Hub

Updated: May 30, 2024

The international art world is increasingly turning its attention to Southeast Asia, where both established and emerging talent are capturing international acclaim. This vibrant region is witnessing an artistic revolution, with brand new artistic hotspots springing up like mushrooms in countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia. Here, art enthusiasts can immerse themselves in art during promising art fairs and exhibitions, and enjoy art retreats that stimulate the imagination.

Hello!

I'm Anneloes, working and living in Penang, the tropical island on the west coast of Malaysia. I am excited to share my latest art updates with you.

Weaving deeply personal stories: Textile artist Jakkai Siributr

Starting with Thai artist Jakkai Siributr. He skillfully intertwines personal experiences both literally and figuratively into his textile works.

Jakkai resides and works in Bangkok where the exhibition 'Matrilineal' is currently on display. The series of works exhibited have arisen after the passing of Jakkai's mother. A direct homage to the significant women in his family; of course his mother, but also aunts and grandmothers. Those who have shaped him. It delves into the sacrifices and trials of women in a Thai patriarchal society. The artworks also touches on subjects regarding the human existence itself, such as the transience of life and grief.

'Matrilineal' is an exceptionally intimate exhibition. For over 25 years, Jakkai has been creating refined textile art. Always deeply personal, the artist does not shy away from addressing political issues. In fact, the artist has only gained recognition in the international art world in recent years, with his work also being showcased at the Venice Biennale this year.

The exhibition 'Matrilineal' can still be visited until May 26 at the 100 Tonson Foundation (Bangkok). Read more.

Art Retreat in the jungle of beautiful Pangkor Island

Creating art for four days straight amidst the jungle on the beautiful Pangkor Island in Malaysia with a group of artists. That was the opportunity I got, and I seized it. Let me make it clear, I work in the art world, but I do not consider myself an artist. Through my friend, artist, and organizer Rebecca Duckett-Wilkinson, I found myself in an 'artist mode' in no time. The environment left nothing to be desired: inspiration was everywhere around us. The unique jungle accommodations invited relaxation and freedom. Moreover, we were treated to delicious local dishes every day – I would go back in a heartbeat. Everywhere you looked, there were exotic trees and flowers, monkeys swinging by, and even majestic hornbills. Creating art every day has a meditative quality to it. It was a fantastic adventure.
